    • Rand first went to sea at age 17 during the 1920s and 30s; he served on two-masted schooners which sailed in the Bay of Fundy and to New England ports. He had his mate's papers by age 23. He served as mate on the schooner "Minas King" and later on the steamer ferry "Kipawo". He received his master's papers by age 28 and captained on the Irving tanker "Molly G". In 1940, he joined the Canadian Army, achieved the rank of C.S.M, and served with Water Transport off the coast of Nova Scotia. In 1947, he was captain of the ferry "Dalhousie City" in Lake Ontario waters. In 1951, he moved to Windsor, Ontario., where he was captain of the C.N.R. ferries "Lansdowne" and "Huron" on the Detroit River. In 1956, he moved to Port Elgin, New Brunswick, where he was hired by C.N.R. to captain ferries on the Northumberland Strait between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. He was captain on the ferries "Confederation", "Prince Edward Island", "Scotia", "Abegweit", and the "John Hamilton Grey". In 1970, after 46 years at sea, he retired to Bridgetown, where he served a term as a town councillor and was a charter member of the Bridgetown Coffee Club, where he had many valued friends. He was the last survivor of the immediate family of ten.
