Military Service  In the summer of 1776 while residing in Walpole, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, John enlisted as a Private for 6 months in Captain Goldsmith's Company, Colonel Waits Regiment. On this enlistment, he, however, entered the service at Charleston, Sullivan County, New Hampshire in Captain Christopher Webber's Company, Colonel Benjamin Bellow's Regiment of New Hampshire Militia. They marched to Mount Independence in Vermont opposite of Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain, where he served until being discharged in the fall of the same year.

In the spring of 1777 on May 7th, John entered the service under the same officers as a Volunteer for 2 months and went to reinforce the northern Continental Army at Ticonderoga. During this service John served at Mount Independence until discharged on June 21st after serving 1 month and 15 days. He was paid for traveling 98 miles to Mount Independence and 58 miles home.

One week later, on June 28, 1777, when Fort Ticonderoga was besieged by the enemy (British General John Burgoyne's forces), John enlisted for six months under the same Officers to reinforce the Garrison at Fort Ticonderoga. Again he joined his Company at Charleston, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. After July 3rd, the Regiment in which John was serving was under the command of Colonel Moses Nichols. John marched with his Company to Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont, thence on to Bennington in the same county where he was in the Battle on August 16, 1777. Prior to this 6 month enlistment expiring, John was discharged, he, however, soon after enlisted for 3 months and served under the same officers near Bennington.

In the spring of 1780, on July 6th, John enlisted for 3 months in Captain Peter Page's Company of New Hampshire Militia in Colonel Moses Nichols Regiment to join the Continental Army for the defence of West Point. John joined his Company this time at Winchester, Cheshire County, New Hampshire from where they marched to Hudson on the Hudson River in New York, thence to Fishkill and then to West Point where he serviced until discharged. John was at West Point when General Benedict Arnold deserted. On February 13, 1781, John received from Captain Page at Walpole, New Hampshire, 300 pounds in part payment of his 469 pounds wages earned during this enlistment.
