Per Pope book.....ADOLPHUS MERRIAM was brought up on a farm in Concord, and, beside the "district schools," had one term at Framingham Academy. When he was 17 years old, he went to Southbridge, and entered the office of the Hamilton Woollen Company, in which his older brother Charles was interested. He remained in Southbridge 12 years, till he learned the business thoroughly; then purchased a small mill at Springfield, Vermont, which he operated for 4 years. Returning to Southbridge, he entered into partnership with Joshua and Gayton Ballard in woollen manufacture. In 1864 he removed to South Framingham, which was thenceforward his home. He was associated with others in mills at Milbury, Cordaville, Watertown, and Southbridge, and was a director and president of the American Powder Company, and president of the Gunpowder Trade Association of the United States. He was an earnest temperance man, was town assessor and selectman at Southbridge, active in filling the town quota of troops, and in advocating the Federal cause during the Rebellion. He was president of the National Bank, and took the helm of the savings-bank in an hour of its embarrassment, and aided much in resotring it to a high position. He was liberal in religion; a man of plain and unostentatious manners, always genial and approchable, a sagacious and helpful adviser {See Hurd's History of Middlesex County]
