Notes |
- The indenture agreement of David Merriam appeared in the Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly, Vol 12-14, January, 1909, published by the Old Northwest Genealogical Society. It also provides a brief biography:
How well David Meriam "learned the Art and Mistery of Husbandry" is shown in the thorough manner in which he proceeded to reclaim the wilderness, where he and his faithful "Molly" (as she was called) pitched their tent near the foot of Wachuset Mountain, far from the settlements about Boston. .. they made it yield more than an hundred fold in corn and flax and the products of the dairy and a goodly number of healthy children.
They were married in 1769, and in Sept.. 1770, their first born came to their little cabin. In honor of the event the happy father makes this significant record in his first family almanac (which bears the marks of service in the chimney corner) in his bold handwriting, "Unto us A Child is Born" on the page devoted to September. In the year 1787 he built one of those immense dwelling houses so typical of that period and locality, which still stands a proof of the thorough manner in which the job was done. This good wife has also handed down to her posterity some tangible evidences of her skill with the needle and at the loom...Another of her most precious inheritances has also come down to us. A fine copy of the English Bible, printed at Edinborough, 1748. A gift doubtless from her father, as it was presented to her ten years before her marriage. In it she has written her little story, embodying her name, her country and her religion, in these simple words:
"Martha Conant is my name. New England is my Nation, Concord is my Dwelling Place, Christ is my Salvation." [4]
