"On McGregor's Creek in front of the Market Square lived the widow Ann Smith, an English woman whose husband had been a miller at McGregor's Mill. Her son Michael Smith had built a log house on the Market Square where he sold liquor. The banks of the creek above were occupied by negro families, with the exception of George Merriam, Sr., and his sons George and Salem, who had settled in front of lot 66 about 1830. Their coloured neighbours, on both sides of them, were John Douglas, Charles Bakewell, James Stump, and George Straws. On the north-east bank of the creek were two negroes, John Robinson and a blacksmith named George St. Denis; and a Frenchman, Jacques Fevier. John White, the tanner, lived now on the river between the military and the gaol (British - jail) reserves. The rest of Chatham remained unoccupied, until the public sale of lots which was held soon after."
