Granddad, Frank Roy Meriam, was highly respected in his community and one of the most successful farmers in the Dorenlee region of Alberta.

I went to Dorenlee 10 years ago, and talked to neighbors who worked for grandpa when they were 15 - 16 and my granddad was in his seventies. He was fiercely independent and farmed into his 80's, keeping up to 80 head of beef cattle long after he leased out his grain lands. Frank lived till he was 90.

Frank Meriam was a school trustee (Matlock School District) and active in politics. When the 1929 stock market crash happened, my grandfather received a cheque for 50 cents for a full load of cattle. As he was wealthy by comparison to other farmers, he chose to frame the cheque rather than cash it -- as he didn't think the 50 cents was going to make much difference to him and he (rightfully) thought the framed cheque would be a conversation piece for decades to come. It gives some insight into his affable personality and sense of humor .

As early as the 1930's, my grandfather was farming several sections of land. Although he left Ontario, hoping to get away from rocks, his land was very rocky. Something that a grass (prairie) fire exposed the year after he chose his land. He had 4 ft. piles of rocks along the fence line on most of the land that they grain farmed, representing hundreds of hours of rock picking. He was an early adopter of every new piece of machinery and was successful enough to be able to afford it. He ran threshing crews and was instrumental in harvesting crops throughout out the area. He always had a number of farm hands and during threshing season ran a crew of 10 - 12 men working from daylight to dark. Threshing was very labour-intensive and it took a crew of 10-12 men one week to thresh the grain from the average homestead. Neighbours and friends would exchange labour during harvest time and other young men were hired at a rate of $5 or $6 per day to assist. Numerous pieces of Frank Meriam's farm machinery are part of the exhibits in the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. My father met my mother as a result of being a farm hand for my grandfather.

I fondly remember my granddad who insisted on having a driver's license long after his cataracts and glaucoma rendered him legally blind by today's standards (he had tunnel vision). He would pick up his license renewal at the Dorenlee corner store, where he picked up his mail, from the store owner whom he had known for 60 years. I remember us following grandpa on the highway, he thought the dotted line was to line up with his hood ornament. Hence, once while we were following him, a neighbor who knew his visual problems, drove over into the ditch to avoid meeting him. (Good thing it is the flattest of flat prairie there!)
